In 1681, William Penn received a land grant by King Charles II and it was named Pennsylvania after his father whom the king owed a large debt to. William Penn was determined to provide religious toleration in the land given to him. In New England, Quakers were persecuted for their beliefs because they refused to serve in the military, and thought that all people were equal regardless of their race or social status. Quakers’ willingness to stand up against those in command added to their persecutions. William Penn wanted to provide a safe refuge for Quakers and other religious dissenters who had difficulty dealing with the intolerance of the Puritans. William Penn, who was a Quaker himself, created the “Holy Experiment” whose goal was to make the highest financial gain by having a government that is willing to serve everyone and have greater toleration towards their social background. Pennsylvania’s more liberal government was attractive to European immigrants who learned about this colony through various pamphlets. Since there were a large portions of Quakers in the colony, they allowed all men who owned land to vote. Also the colony was newly settled, there was much land available for immigrants to claim. These immigrants were often from a lower social status and hoped to have a better life. New arrivals were poorer farmers, indentured servants, and people involved in lower income jobs such as carpentry. The economy of Pennsylvania thrived because of successful harvest of grain and other crops. The colony would some of the food produced to stimulate their economy. Since tax money was not given to state churches, it could be used to help improve other aspects of the colony. The colony of Pennsylvania was also safe because since Quakers were pacifists, there was less tension with Native Americans and would often purchase land to reduce conflict. Due to a large amount of immigration from Germany and several other countries in Europe, Pennsylvania’s population grew rapidly and it would continue to survive and prosper in the future.
